This post comes after a review of quite a few Free WordPress Themes which were released in the past month, with an empasis on minimal presentation, blogging and customization ability. There is also one nice free WordPress magazine theme. All but 1 of these references a GPL license. You can also search WordPress.org for Free WordPress Themes.
Free Minimal Themes
This WordPress theme design is a good match for portfolio approaches. It offers a nice slideshow area at the top as well as 3 information zones in the middle. There are also 4 image spotlight areas below the middle 3 blocks. For those looking for a primary conversion zone, you will find this capability just below the slideshow.
For the tech capable, you might want to pull the slideshow and install your own video player or jQuery enhanced area. The theme is built around Custom Post Types and offers a GPL license.
Very similar in visual structure to the above, Colorway brings two visual focus zones to a single top photo highlight area. There are also 4 image based lower boxes nearer the footer. There are also special styles for inserted WordPress Gallery post areas. The pro version offers some additional color schemes as well as slider support.

This is a great theme for blogging on WP. The text areas are broad and easy to read, with a non-busy presentation. Individual page large photo support at the top.
This is a really well laid out magazine theme with emphasis on image zones complimenting one another, while offering ability to turn out large amounts of information in an easy to read fashion. There are also some really nice threaded comments with avatar support. The license is GPL.
