Inconsistent Chinese fonts in WordPress? WENPAI Font Library enables one-click integration of high-quality web fonts.

WordPress does not include Chinese web fonts by default; instead, Chinese text on your site relies entirely on system fonts installed on users’ devices. This leads to significant visual differences across operating systems and devices—Microsoft YaHei on Windows, PingFang on macOS, WenQuanYi on Linux, and sometimes even SimSun as a fallback on certain devices.

WPFonts (WenPai Fonts) solves this problem: it integrates Windfonts’ Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) web font library into WordPress’s native font management system, enabling you to select high-quality CJK fonts directly in the Site Editor—without depending on users’ local fonts.

In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, then search for WPFonts or WenPai Fonts, install the plugin, and activate it.

After activation, you’ll see it listed among your installed plugins:

Step 2: Open Font Management

WPFonts does not have a dedicated settings page—it integrates seamlessly into WordPress’s built-in font management within the Site Editor.

Here, you’ll see the currently available fonts and typography presets:

Click the gear icon next to “Fonts” to open the font management modal:

Note the tabs at the top: In addition to the default Font Library and Upload, WPFonts adds five new tabs—Google Fonts, Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. This is the core functionality of the plugin.

Step 3: Install Chinese Fonts

Click the Chinese tab to view the list of Chinese web fonts provided by Windfonts. Select your preferred font and click “Install.”

Popular high-quality Chinese fonts include:

  • Noto Sans SC / Source Han Sans — A widely compatible sans-serif font co-developed by Google and Adobe

  • LXGW WenKai — An open-source regular script (KaiTi) font with a warm, elegant aesthetic—perfect for artistic or literary sites
  • Smiley Sans — A modern, bold display font well-suited for headings

Once installed, return to the Typography panel and select your newly installed font from the dropdown menus under Text or Headings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will installing fonts slow down my page load?
A: Fonts are delivered via Windfonts’ CDN—optimized for fast loading in mainland China. On first visit, a brief font swap (FOUT) may occur, but fonts are cached by the browser thereafter. For best performance, only install fonts you actually use—avoid overloading your site.

Q: Is WPFonts compatible with classic (non-block) themes?
A: WPFonts relies on WordPress 6.5+’s font management API and requires a block theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-Four) to manage fonts via the Site Editor. Users of classic themes can manually reference Windfonts’ font URLs in their custom CSS.

Q: Can I use Japanese and Korean fonts too?
A: Yes. The font management modal includes dedicated Japanese and Korean tabs, with identical usage flow to the Chinese tab—ideal for multilingual sites.

Q: Where are the font files stored?
A: Installed fonts are saved in WordPress’s wp-content/fonts/ directory and loaded via the Windfonts CDN. Uninstalling the plugin will not delete already installed fonts.
